Structural materials that require the use of safety critical applications need to follow a set of requirements before eligibly being used within the fields its required in.
That’s why the understanding of how specific materials are structured at the nano level should be the up most importance before using these materials in safety critical environments.
For a material to pass this regulation there are two properties that need to be inspected, firstly the material needs to require a high amount of overall strength and secondly the material needs to have a high resistance to crack growth, this is also known as damage tolerance.
Therefore, the basic understanding of a material’s elemental makeup and its structure quality are equally important when inspecting materials for these type of high strength environments.
